Bedding - Beating Bad Behaviour

Bedding may be a practical, functional thing for most of us - a way to make our beds comfy and cosy, and bedding helps us keep our sleeping space easy to clean and to freshen up. But for young children, bedding can become something familiar, enticing and comforting. Night time for some youngsters can be difficult - fear of the dark, not wanting to be alone, not wanting to go to sleep and miss out on any action - and bedding that is familiar and comfortable is important to help win the battle for bed time.

Bedding - Creature Comforts

Toddlers like to feel safe and secure, which is why so many are so fond of their dummies or baby blankets. Bedding that they feel happy and secure in can help. If you're having trouble for example persuading your toddler to move from his parent's bed to his own bed, take him shopping to choose his own bedding, let him decorate his bed with his favourite teddies, and show enthusiasm about the bed. As well as good bedding, dim lighting, or lights that work on a dimmer switch, can help - leaving a hint of light for comfort.

Beds are for Sleeping

Don't let your child fall asleep on the sofa then carry them to bed, they'll only wake-up, throw off their bedding feeling disorientated and come looking for you for comfort, disturbing their sleep cycle. Once your child is in bed and tucked under comfortable bedding, they must stay there. Don't accept excuses that they are hungry or want to go downstairs. Ensure they have water at hand and access to the bathroom, but don't engage in conversations or be pulled into debates about bed time. Just repeat your bedtime mantra (night, night/ don't let the bed bugs bite/ sleep tight etc.) and put your child back under their bedding, leaving the room briskly.

Bedding Battles

Remember if your child is brimming full of life, it's because they are wired to explore and don't want to miss out. Do any excitable activities early on in the evening, then before bed begin your bedtime routine. Draw the curtains in the living room, switch the TV off, read a bed time book or do a quiet activity before saying your bedtime mantra and pulling back the bedding.
