Bedding care and replacement

We spent around one third of our lives in bed, so it's not surprising that we want to get a long lifespan out of our bedding. How you use and care for your bedding, along with the type of bedding you choose in the first place can help you to get real value for money in the long term.

Caring for your bedding

There are several simple steps you can follow in order to ensure your bedding lasts as long as possible. They're not time-consuming and they're not expensive, but putting them into practice will help you to enjoy your bedding for as long as possible:

  • Buy quality bedding - the price of good quality bedding has come down over the years and the advent of online bedding retailers means you no longer have to visit the top department or linen stores in order to find good bedding. Buying the best quality bedding you can will help you to get better value for money.
  • Look at thread count - there was a time when thread count was the only measure of good quality bedding. Today, you can choose both the thread count and the type of cotton - the right mix of both will produce long-lasting bedding. Egyptian cotton typically comes in high thread counts, and this produces some of the best bedding in the world. If that's out of your price league, look for 100% cotton bedding, or bedding with a high cotton content.
  • Follow the instructions - this may seem like common sense, but the washing instructions on your bedding are there for a reason. If your duvet covers have more than one fabric on them, or have beading, buttons or other raised decoration, you must follow the washing instructions if you want them to look like new each time. Some bedding may require washing before you use it - this will help to soften the cotton, making it more comfortable to sleep in.
  • Regular changes - change your bedding regularly. We sweat and lose skin cells when we're in bed, and our bedding is the first recipient of both. Both for hygienic reasons and to keep your bedding looking good for as long as possible, change your sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers on a regular basis.

If you're about to buy new bedding, think about how long you want it to last and choose bedding that's both comfortable and durable. Caring for your bedding properly will not only make it more comfortable to sleep in; it will give it a long lifespan.
