Bedding for Light Sleepers

Getting a good night's sleep can sometimes feel like an elusive goal. If it feels like you're trapped in a routine of tossing and turning, waking at 3am or jolting awake every other hour, you need to examine your sleeping conditions. Comfortable bedding and bedding that's not too hot, or leaves you feeling cold, is crucial. All the guides to getting a good night's sleep focus on eliminating stimulants in the evening, avoiding heavy meals too late in the evening, and focusing on stress management, such as investing in a notebook to put beside your bed to write down any thoughts that are bothering you. But what if you have the perfect bedding, are relaxed, comfortable and stimulant-free but still can't sleep?

Beyond Bedding - Seeing the Light

Your bedding could be of the finest Egyptian cotton or satin sheets, but if the light isn't right it doesn't matter how luxurious or comfortable your bedding is. Bedding is just one element of your sleep environment you need to address. Light and noise can cut through deep sleep and the amount of light you are exposed to in the evenings and mornings could explain why you are sensitive to light and disrupted sleep. Light creates a biochemical signal to our body, telling us when we need to be awake and alert. So if your bedroom is restful and your bedding perfect, it could be time to look at the lighting in your room.

Get the Light Right

Darkness, like comfortable bedding, is conducive to undisturbed sleep. Light informs our internal body clocks, and if you experience bright light in the evening, it's thought it can push our body clocks forward, making it harder to fall asleep. Internal body clocks can help regulate a good night's sleep, which is why sleep experts recommend going to bed and waking up at the same hour, whether it be a week day or weekend. If your bedding is warm, clean and inviting, but your bedroom light is harsh and bright, it can be counterproductive. Consider investing in a dimmer switch. Turn the lights down in your bedroom half an hour before bed, or invest in a dull bedside lamp. As well as ensuring the bedding is inviting and light's are low, in the run up to bedtime turn down the lights in the living room or kitchen in the evening and draw the curtains if it's light outside.

Invest in Bedding not TVs

Rather than investing in TVs and DVD players in your bedroom that emit harsh light and stimulate the mind, think about investing in luxury bedding and comfortable cushions instead. Consider the harsh light often used in bathrooms too - it's no use getting your eyes and mind used to fading light, only to be bombarded by harsh brightness when you go to brush your teeth. Consider a nightlight in the bathroom, or failing that - some sleep experts even recommend wearing sunglasses!
