Bedding is seen by most people as belonging to the night. We buy bedding specifically to accommodate our nocturnal sleep. But for some, sleep is something that infiltrates their day to day activities - and a bit of extra bedding, such as a warm blanket or extra pillow, is just the thing to have at hand. Polyphasic sleep refers to people who tap into the idea that taking frequent naps through the day rather than one long chunk of sleep at night, is more productive. Leonardo da Vinci probably had extra bedding at hand - he was one of the most famous advocates for this approach to sleep, saying it helped his productivity levels. And the fact the man is considered to be an all-round genius might be evidence enough for some.
Extra Bedding for Power Naps
You can actually buy alarm clocks that will beep every three and a half hours to tell you it's time for your next nap, which is supposed to last just 30 minutes, before the alarm tells you to wake up again. For some the practicality of lugging bedding around with them all day simply doesn't work - it can be impossible if you work in an office for example to find a quiet corner to set up your bedding and take a power nap. The method of factoring in three and half hours of sleep into your day is said to suit those whose lifestyles aren't reliant on 9-5 routines, such as the unemployed, retired or artists.
Extra Bedding out of Necessity
But for some, napping or polyphasic sleep is a necessity. Those in crisis situations or suffering an illness or sleep disorder may have to re-think the traditional approach to bedding and sleep. Systematic naps on long-distance solo boat races have been studied as a means of ensuring optimum performance when sleep deprivation is inevitable. But many sleep experts say being prepared with bedding and blankets for impromptu ultrashort power naps as a lifestyle choice is not recommended. Naps have however been shown to improve performance in extreme situations, as studies conducted by the US military have shown. Studies looking into ways to combat fatigue in the armed forces have concluded their soldiers should endeavour to put down bedding for 45 minutes of continuous sleep for a nap to be effective.
