Michael Caine famously put the success of his marriage down to the fact he and his wife had separate beds. It may be an additional expense to shell out for two beds and two lots of bedding, but if you have the spare room in your house, investing in extra bedding may just save your relationship.
Time to buy more bedding?
The idea of sleeping apart may not sound conducive to a couple in love, but in fact, sleep experts say we were never meant to share our beds. The fact is other bodies cause noises and cramp our space, increasing the risk of disturbed sleep. Buying extra bedding could just be what the doctor ordered if you're desperate to improve the quality of your sleep. Sleep deprivation impacts on our emotional and physical well being, slowing down our reactions, memory function and increasing our susceptibility to stress, depression and accidents. And it also makes us grumpy.
Separate rooms, extra bedding
Research suggests investing in extra bedding and separate bedrooms can in fact be crucial to your health. Lack of sleep puts women at a higher risk of heart disease, psychological problems, depression and causes general grumpiness. The researchers say this is because women need more sleep than men, and suffer if forced to go without it. Investing in an extra bed and bedding seems like a minor concession when faced with the alternatives.
Sleep problems and health problems
Researchers in America's Duke University in North Carolina conducted a survey with healthy male and female volunteers to link sleep with emotional problems such as anger, hostility and depression. Women who are desperate for their own bed and bedding because their partner snores can now argue that their health depends on it. Women with regularly disturbed sleep are, the researchers found, more likely to have a substance in their blood linked to Type 2 diabetes. Although both sexes suffered from sleep deprivation, the women were shown to suffer more. Buying bedding for a second bed should be a consideration if you feel your health is being affected by poor sleep. It's been suggested that women with sleeping problems are at increased risk of stroke and heart attack. The research found however that the men were not at increased risk of these conditions in the same way the women were.
Separate bedding better for the heart
Maybe buying a new bed and bedding for your wife could be the best present that you could give her. Dr Edward Suarez, associate professor from Duke's University told the press: "The results were so dramatic that 33 per cent of the women who were poor sleepers had protein levels associated with a high risk of heart disease." Those who struggle to fall asleep at night are the ones who were at greater risk, rather than the overall sleep quality throughout the night: "Women who reported taking half an hour or more to fall asleep showed the worst risk profile."
