Bedding - How Often do you Wash Yours

How often do you wash your duvet?

Is your bedding home to 20,000 dust mites? According to tests at the University of Worcester that's the average number of the little critters found in ten duvets examined as part of a research project. The added horror that two in five Britons said they didn't wash their duvets every six months. In one case the research said one duvet hadn't been washed in 11 years. The scientists found 45g of debris in the bedding, including dust mite faeces.

Bedding to Give you Nightmares

The scientists said the lack of hygiene and bedding meant Britons are likely to have some rather unpleasant sleeping partners - with bedding riddled with dust mites and dead skin. Although having dirty bedding may impact on a peaceful night's sleep - the thought of lying down with 20,000 ugly critters is enough to give anyone nightmares. But as well as your dirty bedding impacting on a peaceful night's sleep, dirty bedding can also cause serious problems for those susceptible to allergies or who suffer from asthma.

Bedding and the Health Problems

Professor Jean Emberlin who is the director of the national pollen and aerobiology research centre at the University of Worcester and who carried out the research told BBC News that the lack of hygiene in bedding was a cause for concern: "This content has serious implications for health as the contaminants can cause symptoms of asthma, rhinitis and conjunctivitis and irritate existing cases of eczema," she said.

It's estimated that 41% of the British population don't wash their bedding or duvets every six months, with some never washing their duvets.

Pets and Bedding

If you have pets that have taken a fancy to your bedding, you could be triggering asthma and allergies. It may be hard to kick your favourite pooch off your bedding, but consider the fact pet allergies can be seriously debilitating to your health. When you look beyond the cute furriness, think about the dead skin flakes and the proteins in the dog or cat's saliva, as well as the dried urine smeared over your bedding. It's these bodily excretions that trigger allergies. If you can't bear to get rid of a pet because of an allergy, you should ensure they keep off your bedding and ideally limit the pet to an carpet-free room or keep them outside as much as possible.
