Bedding - how to make your bed

Changing the bedding has always been one of those jobs that people don't want to do. That's largely because tucking in sheets and putting on duvet covers can be fiddly and time-consuming. To make the most of your bedding, try these tips on making your bed as easily as possible:

  • Fitted sheets - the advent of fitted sheets has made bed-making much easier. With elasticated corners, these sheets just stretch over your mattress, making hospital corners redundant and giving you a smooth, flat finish without the hassle. You can buy great quality fitted sheets from online bedding stores.
  • Duvet covers - this is the bedding that taxes most people when it comes to making the bed. Duvets are great inventions, allowing us to change bedding easily, but still stay warm at night. Different "togs" of duvets give us different levels of warmth and you can attach duvets together to create an extra-heavy duvet when the winter sets in. However, from a bedding point of view, getting the duvet cover on to the duvet can be a problem. There is an answer, though, and it starts with the moment you take the old duvet cover off:
    • Remove the duvet cover, and leave it inside out. Re-do the poppers or buttons, which will help to prevent other washing from getting tangled up inside the duvet cover during the washing cycle.
    • Wash and dry inside out. Iron the duvet cover and fold, still inside out, ready for its next use.
    • When you're ready to put the duvet bedding back on, unfold the cover, still inside out. Put your hands up inside the cover until you reach the two furthest corners. With your hands still inside the cover, grip the top two corners of your duvet. All you need to do now is shake your duvet cover over the rest of the duvet. The cover will be the right way round and all you have to do is make sure the bottom corners are in the right place and re-do the poppers. Shake the duvet out and your bedding work is done.
  • Throws and cushions - if you accessorise your bed with throws and cushions, just pile them up neatly on one side whilst you sort out the sheets, pillow cases and the duvet. You should then just be able to unfold the throw in its original position and place the cushions back onto the rest of the bedding.

By choosing simple-to-use bedding and following the instructions on fitting the duvet cover without any hassle, you should find that changing the bed becomes a lot less of a chore.
