Choosing and buying your bedding is just part of creating a wonderful, welcoming bedroom. Once your bedding has been delivered, you need to dress your bed so that it looks comfortable and inviting.

You've probably already thought about how you want your bed to look when you've put all the bedding on. Most of all, a bed needs to look as if it's a good place to sleep. Clean, flat sheets and pristine covers, along with tactile cushions or a warm throw all help to create the environment and atmosphere you want. • Bedding - having chosen your bedding, you need to make sure it looks and feels its very best. If you've bought Egyptian cotton bedding, it's worth washing it before you put it on the bed - the cotton becomes softer with each wash, so why not make sure you give it some care and attention before you put it onto your bed. For most people, there's nothing quite like climbing into a freshly laundered bed, so give your bedding a once-over with the iron to make all the difference.

• Accessories - whether you've bought cushions, extra pillows, quilts or throws to go with your new bedding, make sure they are plumped up or smoothed out so that your bed looks uncrumpled and welcoming. Buy small and large cushions to create a really decadent look, and choose silk, satin or decorative finishes to give an added edge to your bed.

• Lighting - although this isn't necessarily an integral part of your bed, lighting plays an important part in all our rooms. The lighting you choose both for your overhead lights and for mood lighting or reading lighting can have an effect on how inviting your bedroom looks. Choosing bedding that has fabric that catches or reflects the light will make your bedroom really appealing.

The real finishing touch, however, is trying out your bed for yourself. Until you snuggle down and feel the softness, comfort and weight of your sheets or duvet and the coolness of the freshly-laundered pillow cases on your face, you won't be aware of what a great space you've created with your new bedding.
